Ganderbal, July 14 (JKNS): A young woman’s mysterious death in the Safapora area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has triggered massive protests after reports emerged suggesting she may have been raped and murdered.
Locals, civil society members, and traders took to the streets, demanding immediate justice and stringent punishment for the accused.
According to locals, the woman was found dead at her in-laws’ residence. Initially believed to be a case of natural death, the situation took a serious turn after Safapora Police insisted on conducting a postmortem.
“One of the locals, as per news agency JKNS, said, ‘We assembled immediately when we heard something had happened to her. We rushed to her in-laws’ home and found her dead. Safapora and Ganderbal Police both suggested a postmortem, but we didn’t agree at first, thinking it was a natural death. However, Safapora Police insisted and said it must be done. After the postmortem report came, it became clear this wasn’t an accident but a murder. We’re now protesting to demand justice. The killer must be arrested and punished.’”
Another protester said, “We came to offer condolences, and at first, we were told it was an accident. But later, hospital reports revealed it was not a natural death. We were shocked to know it was a murder. Today, we are protesting as one. The entire trade community is here. The market is closed. This is the first such incident in Safapora, and we are at a loss for words. What we’re hearing about this case is horrifying. It’s the height of brutality.”
The protests intensified, with slogans of “Katiloon Ko Phansi Do” echoing through the area. In response, SSP Ganderbal, Khalil Ahmad Poswal, visited Safapora to address the protesters directly.
Speaking to the crowd, as per JKNS, SSP Poswal said, “A forensics team was immediately called. All samples have been collected and sent to the lab. I just need your cooperation anyone who saw something or has evidence should come to us and record their statement. I was called yesterday and told to avoid the postmortem, but I said no there will be a postmortem, and action will follow. This case is being treated as murder, and I guarantee a formal arrest will happen. There will be no bail. Anyone found aiding the accused will also be booked. This is not about me; this is about justice.”
He further added, “Please make a team of four responsible members who will stay in touch with the police. If at any point you feel the investigation isn’t being done fairly, you can come to me directly. This is not just a law-and-order issue it’s about a fair investigation.”
As of now, the police have yet to officially name any suspects. However, SSP Poswal’s on-ground assurance and the growing public outrage have intensified pressure on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly.
The incident has deeply shocked the community, with many calling it a dark and disturbing first in the area’s history. The public has vowed to continue protests until justice is delivered. (JKNS)
