Srinagar, July 20: With a significant surge of monsoon moisture expected to reach Jammu and Kashmir from tonight, weather experts have cautioned that the next 48 hours could witness intense rainfall, flash floods, landslides and a rapid rise in river water levels, urging the administration to remain on high alert and strengthen preparedness in vulnerable areas.
According to a detailed weather assessment shared by independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng, as per the news agency JKNS, a Western Disturbance, interacting with the active monsoon system, is expected to push abundant moisture into the Union Territory, enhancing rainfall intensity across both the Jammu and Kashmir regions.
The assessment indicates that the most intense weather activity is likely over the next two days, although intermittent rainfall is expected to continue during the following days as well.
As per the assessment, the Jammu region is likely to witness heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods, overflowing streams and landslides. Smaller nallahs may overflow rapidly, while major rivers are expected to witness a sharp rise in water levels, with some locations potentially approaching or crossing flood alert or danger marks, depending on the rainfall intensity.
For the Kashmir Valley, widespread moderate to heavy rainfall has been forecast, with isolated places likely to receive very heavy rainfall. The report warns of a high risk of flash floods, particularly in hilly and mountainous areas, while localized cloudburst-like events cannot be ruled out.
The assessment further states that major tributaries, including the Lidder and Vishow Nallah, are expected to respond quickly to heavy rainfall with a rapid rise in water levels. The River Jhelum is also expected to witness a significant increase in discharge, warranting close monitoring by the authorities.
The advisory also warns of an extremely high risk of landslides, shooting stones and lightning, particularly along mountain roads and vulnerable slopes. It advises people to avoid unnecessary travel in hilly areas and refrain from venturing near rivers, streams and other flood-prone locations during the forecast period.
Meanwhile, the assessment has urged the district administrations, disaster management authorities and emergency response agencies to maintain heightened preparedness, continuously monitor rainfall and river levels, and take timely precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property in vulnerable areas.
