The Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) has issued a recruitment notification inviting online applications for the posts of Assistant Professor (Backlog Vacancies) in the Higher Education Department (HED), Jammu & Kashmir. Eligible candidates who are domiciles of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir can apply online through the Commission’s official website within the prescribed schedule.

The recruitment has been announced through Notification No. 06-PSC (DR-P) of 2026, dated 31 July 2026, in accordance with the J&K Education (Gazetted) College Service Recruitment Rules, 2026, and the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (Business and Procedure) Rules, 2021, as amended from time to time.

Important Application Dates

According to the notification, the online application process will begin on 1 August 2026. Candidates must complete the online application, upload all required documents, and pay the prescribed fee by 31 August 2026.

Applicants who successfully submit their forms will be allowed to edit specified fields in their online application from 1 September 2026 to 3 September 2026.

Total Vacancies

JKPSC has notified 65 backlog vacancies for the post of Assistant Professor across multiple disciplines in Government Colleges under the Higher Education Department.

The vacancies are distributed among various subjects, including English Literature, Mathematics, Chemistry, Sociology, Political Science, Geology, Persian, Arabic, Punjabi, Anthropology, Clinical Biochemistry, Nutrition, Water Management, Kashmiri, Agriculture Technology, Functional English, Industrial Chemistry, Islamic Studies, Music & Instrument Vocal, Information Technology, Horticulture Technology, Music, Statistics, and Veterinary Technology, with category-wise reservations specified in the notification.

Educational Qualification

Candidates applying for the post of Assistant Professor must possess the prescribed academic qualifications mentioned in the notification.

In general, applicants should have a Master’s Degree with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in the relevant subject from an Indian University or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.

The notification also specifies eligibility relating to NET, SLET, or SET qualification, along with exemptions available for eligible Ph.D. degree holders in accordance with applicable UGC regulations. Separate eligibility provisions have also been provided for Music and certain other disciplines as detailed in the notification.

Age Limit

The age limit will be determined as on 1 January 2026.

The maximum age limits notified are:

  • Open Merit (OM): 40 years
  • Reserved Categories: 43 years
  • In-service/Government Candidates: 40 years
  • Physically Challenged Candidates: 42 years

The notification also specifies the corresponding birth date criteria for each category.

Domicile Requirement

Applicants must be domiciles of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir and should possess a valid domicile certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed format.

The Commission has stated that domicile certificates issued after the last date for submission of applications will not be accepted.

Application Fee

Candidates are required to pay the prescribed fee through online mode after submitting the application form.

The fee structure is as follows:

  • General Category: ₹1,200
  • Reserved Categories: ₹700
  • PHC Candidates: Nil

Applications submitted without payment of the applicable fee will be treated as incomplete and rejected.

Documents Required

Applicants are required to upload mandatory documents while submitting the online application.

These include:

  • Date of Birth Certificate (Matriculation Certificate)
  • Domicile Certificate of the UT of J&K
  • Graduation Degree
  • Postgraduate Degree
  • NET/SLET/SET/Ph.D. certificate, wherever applicable

Candidates claiming reservation or additional weightage must upload the relevant supporting certificates as specified in the notification, including category certificates, disability certificates, experience certificates, research publications, awards, and other prescribed documents wherever applicable.

Selection Process

JKPSC has stated that the selection of candidates will be conducted in accordance with Rule 45 of the J&K Public Service Commission (Business & Procedure) Rules, 2021, as amended.

The written examination will consist of one paper of three hours’ duration carrying 120 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The detailed syllabus is available on the Commission’s official website.

Examination Centres

The written examination will be conducted at Srinagar and Jammu examination centres.

Candidates will have to indicate their preferred examination centre while submitting the application. The allotment of centres will remain at the discretion of the Commission, and requests for change of centre after allotment will not be entertained.

Online Application Instructions

The Commission has advised applicants to complete their One Time Registration (OTR) before applying online. Candidates should carefully verify their eligibility, fill in all required details accurately, upload the prescribed documents, and ensure successful payment of the application fee before the closing date.

The notification also advises candidates to avoid waiting until the final day to submit applications in order to prevent issues arising from heavy website traffic or payment failures.

Misconduct and Verification

According to the notification, applications will initially be accepted provisionally. Detailed scrutiny of eligibility and supporting documents will be carried out during document verification.

The Commission has also outlined action against candidates found guilty of submitting false information, fabricated documents, impersonation, examination misconduct, or other violations. Such candidates may face cancellation of candidature, debarment, or other action as provided under the applicable rules.
