The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have released the Detailed Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) No. 04/2026 for recruitment to various posts of Junior Engineer (JE) and Depot Material Superintendent (DMS). The recruitment notification has been issued by the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, and provides for a total of 3,993 vacancies across all RRBs.
The online application process for RRB JE Recruitment 2026 is scheduled to begin on August 14, 2026. Eligible candidates can submit their applications online through the official RRB websites until September 13, 2026, up to 11:59 PM. The last date for payment of the application fee is September 15, 2026.
RRB JE Recruitment 2026: Key Details
Under CEN 04/2026, the notified positions include various Junior Engineer posts along with the post of Depot Material Superintendent. The posts carry Level 6 pay under the 7th Central Pay Commission, with an initial pay of ₹35,400.
The prescribed age range is 18 to 33 years, with age calculated as on January 1, 2027. The detailed post-wise medical standards and eligibility requirements are provided in the notification and its annexures. The total number of vacancies notified across all RRBs is 3,993.
The vacancy distribution is provisional and may be increased or decreased depending on the requirements of the concerned Railway Administrations. The detailed RRB-wise and Railway Zone/Production Unit-wise distribution is provided in Annexure B of the notification.

RRB JE 2026 Vacancy Details
The recruitment notification contains a total of 3,993 vacancies. The category-wise grand total mentioned in the vacancy tables is 1,699 vacancies for UR candidates, 624 for SC candidates, 363 for ST candidates, 913 for OBC candidates and 394 for EWS candidates.
The notification also indicates 387 vacancies for Ex-Servicemen and reservations under various applicable categories of Persons with Benchmark Disabilities. The detailed distribution is provided RRB-wise and Railway/Production Unit-wise in Annexure B.
The vacancies are spread across different technical and railway departments. The notified positions include Junior Engineer posts associated with electrical, civil, mechanical, signal and telecommunications, among other areas, along with Depot Material Superintendent under the Stores department.
Educational Qualification for RRB JE 2026
Candidates must possess the educational, technical or professional qualification prescribed for the particular post from a recognised University, Institute or other eligible institution. The required qualification must already have been obtained by September 13, 2026, which is the closing date for online applications.
Candidates who are waiting for the final result of the prescribed qualification are not eligible to apply. The notification specifically states that applicants must fulfil the required qualification on or before the closing date.
The educational requirements vary according to the post and examination group. For several Junior Engineer positions, the notification prescribes a three-year Diploma in the relevant engineering discipline or an eligible combination of related engineering streams.
For example, certain electrical JE posts require a three-year Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or a combination of specified sub-streams from a recognised University or Institute. Civil-related posts have their own prescribed qualifications, including a three-year Diploma in Civil Engineering or, for specified posts, a three-year B.Sc. in Civil Engineering.
For the Depot Material Superintendent post, candidates are required to possess a three-year Diploma in Engineering in any discipline from a recognised University or Institution. Higher qualifications such as B.E./B.Tech are also accepted in lieu of the three-year Diploma in Engineering in the same discipline.
Age Limit and Relaxation
The age limit for the recruitment is 18 to 33 years, with the age being reckoned as on January 1, 2027. The notification provides prescribed upper-age relaxation for eligible reserved categories and other categories as applicable under the recruitment rules.
For SC and ST candidates, the upper-age relaxation mentioned in the notification is five years. Other applicable relaxations are subject to the prescribed conditions and submission of the required certificates.
Candidates are required to enter their date of birth as recorded in their Matriculation, SSLC or equivalent certificate while creating their account. Any discrepancy in the date of birth can lead to disqualification.
Application Fee
The examination fee varies according to the candidate’s category.
Candidates belonging to categories other than those specifically listed for the concession are required to pay ₹500. Of this amount, ₹400 will be refunded after deducting applicable bank charges when the candidate appears in the first-stage CBT.
Candidates belonging to SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minority or Economically Backward Class (EBC) categories are required to pay ₹250. This amount will also be refunded, after applicable bank charges, to candidates who appear in the first-stage CBT.
The notification clarifies that the EBC category for fee concession should not be confused with OBC or EWS. Candidates claiming the EBC concession must possess the required valid supporting document within the prescribed timeline.
Fee payment is to be made online through internet banking, debit card, credit card or UPI. No other mode of fee payment is provided under the notification.
RRB JE 2026 Selection Process
The recruitment process includes Computer Based Tests followed by subsequent stages applicable under the notification, including Document Verification and Medical Examination. The dates for these stages will be notified by the concerned RRBs through their official websites.
Candidates shortlisted for Document Verification and Medical Examination will be selected RRB-wise on the basis of merit in the CBT. Where CBTs are conducted in multiple shifts, marks will be normalised.
The CBT carries negative marking, with one-third of the marks allotted to a question deducted for every incorrect answer.
RRB JE CBT 2026 Exam Pattern and Syllabus
According to the notification, the second-stage CBT contains 150 objective-type questions carrying 150 marks, with a duration of 120 minutes.
The indicative section-wise distribution is:
- General Awareness: 15 questions, 15 marks
- Physics and Chemistry: 15 questions, 15 marks
- Basics of Computers and Applications: 10 questions, 10 marks
- Basics of Environment and Pollution Control: 10 questions, 10 marks
- Technical Abilities: 100 questions, 100 marks
The notification states that the distribution is indicative and may vary in the actual question paper. Negative marking of one-third marks applies for each wrong answer.
The General Awareness portion covers areas such as current affairs, Indian geography, culture and history, the freedom struggle, Indian polity and Constitution, the Indian economy, environmental issues, sports, and scientific and technological developments.
Physics and Chemistry are based on the syllabus up to the Class 10 CBSE level. The computer section includes computer architecture, input and output devices, storage, networking, operating systems, MS Office, data representation, internet, email, websites, web browsers and computer viruses.
The Environment and Pollution Control section covers environmental basics, pollution and its effects, control strategies, air, water and noise pollution, waste management, global warming, acid rain and ozone depletion. Technical questions are based on the relevant examination group and prescribed engineering syllabus.
How to Apply for RRB JE Recruitment 2026
Candidates must submit their applications online through the official RRB websites. Those who have already created an account during earlier RRB Centralised Employment Notices can use the same credentials, while new applicants must create an account before proceeding with the application.
A valid personal mobile number and active email ID are required for account creation and OTP-based communication. The notification states that details entered during account creation, including the mobile number and email ID, cannot subsequently be modified.
Candidates are advised to authenticate their identity through DigiLocker or Aadhaar during account creation. Applicants using alternative photo IDs may be subjected to stricter and more detailed scrutiny during the recruitment process.
Candidates must select only one RRB. They must also indicate their preferences for Railway Zones and posts for which they are eligible and interested. Multiple applications to different RRBs or multiple applications to the same RRB can result in rejection and debarment from the recruitment process.
Application Modification Window
After submitting the application and paying the applicable fee, candidates can modify eligible details during the specified modification period by paying a non-refundable modification fee of ₹250 for each occasion.
However, details entered while creating the account, including the mobile number and email ID, as well as the chosen RRB, cannot be changed. The modification window is scheduled from September 16 to September 25, 2026.
RRB JE 2026 Medical Examination
Candidates shortlisted for Document Verification must also satisfy the medical fitness standards prescribed for their opted posts. The notification lists different medical standards, including A-3, B-1 and C-1, with specific vision and general fitness requirements.
The prescribed standards vary according to the post. Candidates who fail to meet the required medical standard for their opted post will not be given an alternative appointment by the Railways.
Important Instructions for Candidates
Applicants should carefully check the post-wise qualification, medical standard and vacancy details before submitting their applications. The RRB notification makes clear that eligibility is initially considered provisionally based on information provided in the online application, while original documents are verified at the Document Verification stage.
Candidates are also advised to keep their registered mobile number and personal email ID active throughout the recruitment process because important communication will be sent through SMS and email.
