India Begins Evacuation of Students from Iran Amid Escalating Tensions with Israel

Amid intensifying conflict between Tel Aviv and Tehran, the Indian government on Monday began the evacuation of Indian students from Iran via the Armenia route. This move follows the Centre’s assurance that the Indian Embassy in Tehran is continuously monitoring the security situation of Indian nationals, especially students.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson Effie Deffrin assured India of complete cooperation in ensuring the safe evacuation of Indian citizens from Iran. “We will help in whatever way possible to ensure the safe evacuation of Indian nationals from Iran,” Deffrin told CNN-News18.

The Embassy of India in Tehran has formally requested Shiraz University of Medical Sciences to assist in the evacuation process of Indian-origin students. This request follows a communication received from Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Note Verbale No. 151/2530499 dated 15th June 2025), which confirmed that arrangements are in place for the students’ safe departure.

The embassy reiterated that it will take full responsibility for the security and movement of Indian students as part of the evacuation plan.

Smoke continued to rise for the second consecutive day from the Shahran oil depot in northwest Tehran, following an Israeli airstrike. So far, at least 224 people have died due to Israeli attacks across Iran. In retaliation, Iran launched a new wave of missile strikes early Monday, killing at least eight people in Israel.

In anticipation of further escalation, Israel has warned residents in parts of Tehran to evacuate immediately. Monday marks the fourth day of the escalating conflict, which began after Israel targeted key components of Iran’s nuclear, missile, and military infrastructure.

With evacuation efforts underway and tensions mounting, the Indian government remains focused on ensuring the safety and swift return of its nationals from the conflict-hit region.
